Alongside raising three children and touring across the globe with her husband Nathan West’s musical project East of Eli, Chyler Leigh (Supergirl, Grey’s Anatomy) and Nathan still find time to devote to their nonprofit organization named Create Change. Create Change is a solutions-based media community where influencers and individuals from all walks of life can connect, relate, and share their personal experiences to create positive change in our world today, inspiring the next generation to do the same.
And the couple didn’t just create this network to help others; they made it personal. Nathan contributes articles and songs about his own life struggles. In one song, “The Siege,” Nathan talks about never giving up, pressing on, and continuing to venture the road less traveled, no matter what may come at you. Chyler shares her journey to motherhood, overcoming body image issues, and interviews with change makers. She reveals her most personal moments in a touching piece titled “Your Stripes Are Beautiful,” in which she discusses how she learned to love her flaws and accept the changes brought on by motherhood. Chyler also runs a series called “10-4-10,” in which she interviews industry professionals and activists whom she admires. Past celebrities include her Supergirl costars David Harewood and Floriana Lima, as well as the legendary rock music icon Melissa Etheridge. The interviews are done quick-fire style, and the celebrities can share the altruistic nature behind their artistic careers with the world.
The site itself is split into four major sections — “Modern Icon,” “Modern Citizen,” “Gold Standard,” and “C-Pulse” — and they all reflect an important life concept that the contributing influencers aim to teach.
The “Modern Icon” section emphasizes game-changing opinions from entertainment professionals on issues they’re passionate about, such as providing visibility for LGBTQ characters, the role of music in social activism, and even the legacy of Prince. “Modern Citizen” targets readers who would like to contribute themselves, and it gives them a platform to use their talents to encourage social change.
“Gold Standard” focuses more on the personal aspects of professionals’ lives as they overcome difficulties or traumas. Brie Widaman, for example, wrote an inspirational piece that chronicled her mental and physical recovery from a pelvis injury she sustained while training for a charity cycling marathon. This section is especially motivating for those with the desire to discover their own personal resilience. Lastly, “C-Pulse” was aimed to motivate viewers through their own peers’ experiences and plans for the future. The section highlights everyday people who want to change their communities in inspiring ways.
With Chyler and Nathan aiming to inspire, create, and motivate, Create Change has quite the record for success. Nationally recognized as a major publication for entertainers and activists, the organization is projected to be inspiring hundreds of thousands of individuals by the end of the year.
In addition to Create Change, Nathan’s East of Eli has been touring the world this past summer, masterfully combining cinematic folk, pop melodies, and modern electronic music. His sophomore album (Lost Transmission) is dedicated to Chyler and their three beautiful children Noah Wilde West, Taelyn Leigh West, and Anniston Kae West. The album’s title track, “Lost Transmission,” is an anthem for Noah, who is diagnosed with ADHD and autism.
The first single, “Nowhere,” was released on Valentine’s Day, and Chyler made her singing debut on the song. “Nowhere” is Nathan’s love letter to her, a reminder of their devotion to one another despite the challenges that come with both having careers in entertainment. After being featured on People, the single has spread worldwide, and Nathan continued East of Eli’s success with the release of his second single, “Child’s Play,” which quickly climbed the iTunes dance charts.
With a unique sound, it’s no wonder East of Eli has received so much acclaim. Sharing his love with the rest of the world and touring together with Chyler, East of Eli has established an extensive fan base worldwide and continues to inspire young people around the world to be a part of change.
