The truth is music and fashion is forever connected.
Autumn in NYC has no shortage of inspiration, especially when it comes to culture. And what better way to express your mood on a daily basis than to dress up during this beautiful transitional season, with all the glorious and vibrant colored leaves as your color backdrop.
The influence of punk and grunge on fashion cannot be overstated. As we use our physical appearance to help define and express ourselves according to the trends in fashion with its roots in the late ’70s, punk rock was born out of rejection of all things mainstream. British designer Vivienne Westwood got her start in the punk scene and was instrumental in the safety pin-heavy, ripped-up style that took off in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
As we sail into fall, the influence of punk rock and modern grunge, add elements to the lux-edgy looks we styled with pieces by new international designers for our precious InLove readers and fans.
Grunge and punk’s correlation defines a specific moment in twentieth-century music and fashion. Hailing from the northwest U.S. in the 1980s, grunge went on to have global implications for alternative bands and do-it-yourself fashion dressing.
Print motifs – playing with florals and mixing colorful patterns by PREEN LINE and TOP SHOP UNIQUE is a truly British feminine look to explore this season.
Dowdy Pantsuit – is a new power suit, suitable for a night out or for the boardroom by MSGM. You can safely pair it with a little jacket to be tossed away once you leave the office. Of course, it can be very sexy indeed, as you turn around and expose the beautiful detail going down your back.
Green, orange, blues, dusty pink and all shades of yellow – are very modern color combinations used in separates to create a transition between spring-summer and autumn, and they will definitely put you in a cheerful mood.
Off-the-shoulder dramatic luxury dresses by SEREBROVA and RACHEL COMEY create subtly sexy and feminine modern grunge looks, if you’re out on a date with your favorite man, or just meeting friends over prosecco and conversation.
Ruffles are carried into fall. Structured, innovative, girlie-feminine: used on dresses, coats, and blouses, from the VICTORIA BECKHAM runway. They are high-fashionably divine.
Leather and Fringe is especially strong seasonal standouts. It is kind-a-cool-girl accessory this season, as shown with our new CONCEPTO brand, paired with a soft chiffon midi-dress, or shiny metallic pants for stepping out.
Overall, the biggest trend is not to be really paying attention to the seasons at all. You can blame it on the sensually warm fall weather in New York, as fall feels like spring, especially during NYFW, when all fashionistas from all over the world are on the town, looking pretty and fashionable, not according to the season, but according to fashion trends! That’s why you should feel free to slip into slinky wrap dresses, florals, and sleeveless tops, accessorize with one long sexy earring, a small shiny bag, chunky heeled grandma-looking shoes, combat boots and fun makeup. Definitely check out our makeup trend report in the BEAUTY section of InLove.
As for the hair – braid it, twist it, texturize, and let it go. Hair is wild and sexy this season, with a twist of punk rock flair going through one side, colored in some awkward shade.
There is plenty to look forward to in the fall for the modern woman. The ’90s are back with a vengeance. Get grungy (but still look like you’re employed)!
Happy Psychedelic Fall!
