Multi-talented and eye-catching, Canadian actor Cas Anvar is setting himself up to be quite the star (pun intended… read on, you’ll get it!). He is the classic “tall, dark and handsome” lead in SyFy’s #1 hit series The Expanse. Cas plays his character Alex Kamal to perfection, starring opposite colleagues Thomas Jane, Shohreh Agadashloo, Steven Strain, Dominique Tipper and Wes Chatham. The show has been followed by hundreds of thousands of TV viewers, with fans ranging from scientists from CalTech and NASA to journalists throughout the country, and has earned the status of one of the most anticipated sci-fi TV premieres in years. With Season Three of The Expanse set to air on Syfy sometime in February 2018, it will round out an already accomplished year for Cas and cast. Anvar himself has certainly proved his mettle for years by adapting miraculously to the different roles he takes on, tackling challenges on a regular basis to keep his acting game competitive. Besides his current starring role, he has also appeared as a recurring figure on FX’s hit series The Strain. This thriller, from Guillermo del Toro (the “Master of Horrors”) and Carlton Cuse, is based on the best-selling trilogy by del Toro himself and Chuck Hogan. Anvar has played Sanjay Desai, an opportunistic young businessman eager to place himself in a protected position amidst the chaos.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and raised in Montreal, this is one Northern neighbor to keep your eye on! From acting to directing, writing to voice-recording work (on worldwide phenomena video games such as Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Halo 4) this is a man who has done it all. While we wait with baited breath for his newest work to thrill us yet again (his character Alex Kamal is the pilot of a spaceship and downright fascinating), we sat down with him to get an inside look into what makes this actor truly tick…
InLOVE: Your main breakthrough was in the dramatic film Shattered Glass, which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. To you, what was the importance of your role in this film, and does it still hold a special place in your heart?
Cas: Shattered Glass was a wonderful film that I am still proud to have been a part of. It was brilliantly written and directed, with an incredible cast. I played a key role in that I was the man who discovered that our lead (Steven Glass, played by Hayden Christiansen), a reporter at the New Republic, had been fraudulently faking his stories. So, in some ways, I was the guy who brought Steven Glass down.
InLOVE: You played a revolutionary guard in Argo, which was released in October 2012 and starred Ben Affleck. This film had a particularly political message (it was about the tactical escape of Americans stuck in Iran). Do you feel it’s fair to say this acclaimed film helped you in your transition to the American cinema?
Cas: Argo opened many doors for me and I thoroughly enjoyed Oscar season that year!
InLOVE: Argo won several Academy Awards, including 3 British Academy Awards. Do you feel you received fair recognition for your contributions to it?
Cas: I feel I was even more acknowledged for my role as Dr. Mittal in the Oscar-nominated film Room, which won Brie Larson her Best Actress Oscar. I was extremely proud of that stunningly moving film.
InLOVE: On the TV side of things, you’ve been in the science-fiction field well before The Expanse. A modern vampire-themed production, The Strain must have been intense to film. Do you think that your experience with this character (Sanjay Desai) helped in your development for future science fiction roles?
Cas: My role of Sanjay Desai was a terrific departure for me. I got to play a truly corrupted and uncompassionate character who desperately wanted to believe he was doing nothing wrong. It has given me insight into future roles which require digging deep into that dark side of our psyche… but in all honesty, each of my roles is approached individually, as its own creation.
InLOVE: What, in your personal opinion, is unique about the success of The Expanse?
Cas: The Expanse is unique in its gritty, dark realism and depiction of our future. It takes a lot of effort in painting a very accurate picture of what our world will be like in 300 years. We also have an amazing cast and brilliant writing team… which, when combined, are pretty hard to beat!
InLOVE: How do you see the development of your character playing out for the next season? Are you looking forward to new challenges in this role?
Cas: Well, we don’t have scripts yet for Season 3, but the writers have said that Alex is going to have a lot to do this year. He’s s one of the lesser-developed characters from the novels, and they say they are going to try and catch him up this season…
InLOVE: What are your plans for the future? Are you tempted to do any big-screen Hollywood work, or are you sticking with TV for now?
Cas: I am always up for a good feature or indy film! My ideal schedule would be to do 6 months of The Expanse, and 6 months doing 2 features.
InLOVE: What or who inspires you in your career path?
Cas: I have been very inspired by the sci-fi and fantasy genre, but I very much love doing the heart-felt and challenging films like Argo, Room, Diana, and many others… those films that are just good, solid stories. As for inspirations, people who have influenced my becoming an actor are classics like Deniro, Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr., Johnny Depp, Kevin Kline… and films like The Princess Bride, Amadeus, and The Matrix.
InLOVE: Do you have a personal motto, or words that you live by?
Cas: Live life to its fullest; live honestly and with passion.
InLOVE: What does being InLOVE mean to you? It’s our traditional question and we’d love it if you could share with our readers!
Cas: Being InLOVE means, to me, reaching a point where you feel safe to commit fully to something or someone… for I feel you can be in love with a life choice, a career, as well as a person. To me, it means jumping in head-first, embarking on a thrilling, terrifying, and exciting journey of passion and fulfillment. It means that you are willing to do whatever it takes to realize the full potential of whatever/whomever you are in love with.
