Let’s talk about work-life balance, or should we say acting and schoolwork balance? Are you planning to attend college and focus on a different specialty? What would you like to do when you get older?
I’ve wanted to be an actor since I was 7, I think. I even wrote a poem about it back then, so that’s my immediate focus. However, I love pursuing other things, too. I’m a photographer, I love documentary films, and I love reading and writing. I’m not sure where those things may lead. I do hope to go to college at some point. It seems just like another great way to explore.
At only 14 years old, you were the youngest contestant on Dancing with the Stars, taking the record from Zendaya. You received consistently high scores from the judges throughout the season. Did you have any prior dancing experience?
The only experience I really had dancing was those occasional little kiddie class lots of kids do. An occasional ballet or gymnastics class, nothing I could really count on! Dancing with the Stars was truly one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, but it was also very satisfying.
You were cast as Primrose Everdeen, who is Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) younger sister, at the age of 11. How did you adapt to such emotionally demanding role?
I was actually 10. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long already! Back then, I think I just would try to go someplace sad in my memories. Or, I just imagined scenarios in which my twin sister was taken away from me. It was easy then to be truly upset in those scenes. It also helped that I worked with really great actors.
You gained stardom almost right away. Did you have a mentor who helped you get more confident and evolve as an actress?
Always and on every project! There are so many people I have looked up to. I’ve watched how they work, and I was able to just soak up this energy they give to a project. There was so much care, attention to detail, and pure joy. Most of the people I have worked with just seem to love what they’re doing, and I think that’s what sticks with me the most.
