Alonzo King – Lines Ballet

On Wednesday, July 25, Alonzo King LINES Ballet will return to SummerStage for the first time since 2003. This internationally celebrated contemporary ballet company has been guided since 1982 by the artistic vision of Alonzo King. His visionary choreography, brought to life by the extraordinary LINES Ballet dancers, is renowned for connecting audiences to a profound sense of shared humanity. Collaborating with noted composers, musicians, and visual artists from around the world, Alonzo King creates works that draw on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions, imbuing classical ballet with new expressive potential. Alonzo King understands ballet as a science – founded on universal, geometric principles of energy and evolution – and continues to develop a new language of movement from its classical forms and techniques. Alonzo King’s visionary choreography brought to life by the extraordinary LINES Ballet dancers, is renowned for connecting audience to a profound sense of shared humanity.

The San Francisco based company is celebrating their 35th anniversary season, and will perform “Sand” with music by jazz artists Jason Moran and Charles Lloyd, and “Biophony”, a collaboration with natural soundscape artist Bernie Krause and composer Richard Blackford. LINES Ballet has been featured at venues such as the Venice Biennale, Monaco Dance Forum, Maison de la Dance, the Edinburgh International Festival, Montpellier Danse, the Wolfsburg Festival, the Holland Dance Festival, and most recently Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. Now in its thirty- fifth year, Alonzo King LINES Ballet continues its commitment to dance education and community involvement through the LINES Ballet Training Program and Summer Program, the Joint BFA Program in Dance with Dominican University of California, and the LINES Dance Center, one of the largest dance facilities on the West Coast.

This free performance will take place in Central Park from 8 to 10 PM. Doors open at 7 PM. On Tuesday, July 24, Ballet Master and former company dancer Meredith Webster will teach an Alonzo King LINES Ballet Master Class. This intermediate to advanced level class, in partnership with Ailey Extension, is $30 and will take place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, located at 405 W 55th street.
