American Utopia – Freshly Dressed and Progressively Entertaining

Musician, producer and filmmaker, David Byrne is set to bring his musical genius to Broadway. This fall, he’ll convey his successful theatrical tour, American Utopia on stage. For sixteen weeks, David Byrne fans have the opportunity to experience the billboard charting album light up the Hudson Theatre.

David Byrne said the following about the creation of the Broadway production:
“As I was recording the songs for my American Utopia album it occurred to me that they would be exciting to play live- and I realized that a lot of my older material would fit right in….I imagined a live show….I pictured a lot of drummers, a kind of drum line/samba school/second line- that would create the rhythms.“

Scotland native, David Byrne is an artist with his hands in everything. The Golden Globe, Academy Award and Grammy award winner, co-founded the prominent Talking Heads. He is also the founder of the influential Luaka Bop record label which has showcased the music of artists from all over the world. Adding a Broadway experience from his most recent album is another addition to his list of creativity and expansion.

David Byrne’s American Utopia features David Byrne with Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stephane San Juan, Angie Swan and Bobby Wooten III. The design team includes Rob Sinclair (Queen and Adam Lambert to Rock Australia). Karl Mansfield (Avenue Q) is the Musical Director.

Although the Broadway version will be modified a tad bit, the aesthetic and unorthodox artistic elements remain solid. The 11-person ensemble is diverse and international. There are no drumkits, no rusty traditional band positions and a keyboard stand is absent. It’s a distinctive concept that hopefully becomes a thing. The ensemble is liberated. Percussion instruments float freely and smoothly along with Byrne. Hopefully, your favorite tunes from the album make the cut. Barefoot in sharply solid suits, David Byrne and his progressive band perform, Everybody’s Coming to My House at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Let’s cross our fingers that it will make the Broadway cut.

Choreography and Musical Staging is by Annie-B Parson (Ride, Roar, Rise) Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge) serves as a Production Consultant. The music and choreography blend so majestically, David Byrne and his unanchored ensemble make it work.
