The moment we pulled up the lantern-lit drive to the Deer Mountain Inn, it felt as if time had slowed down. Nestled in the heart of the Catskills, the Inn radiates a unique charm—a place where history and modern comfort blend seamlessly to create an unforgettable retreat. With every turn, every room, and every meal, Deer Mountain Inn offered a sense of warmth and wonder that made it more than just a destination. It became a memory, a story, a place we would forever treasure.

Built in the late 1880s, the Inn carries the weight and beauty of history on its shoulders. Originally a summer retreat, it later served as a church-run camp for underprivileged children, and even an annex to a grand hotel, The Toppesfield. While the hotel is long gone, its foundation remains, whispering tales of the past into the cool mountain air. My children were captivated by the stories of the Inn’s earlier days, particularly the rumor that it once belonged to Depression-era gangster Jack “Legs” Diamond. The thought of hidden bullet holes sparked their imaginations, turning every walk on the property into an adventure.

Today, the Inn thrives under the careful stewardship of Chuck and Deborah Royce, who purchased it in 2013. Their dedication, alongside managing director Dan King, has transformed the property into a sanctuary. In 2023, their vision expanded with the addition of four standalone cabins designed by Lewis Jacobson and Iliana Moore. These cabins combine rustic elegance with modern amenities, creating the perfect spaces to unwind.

Walking into the Inn felt like stepping into a warm embrace. Every detail, from the antique Persian rugs in The Attic to the autumnal hues throughout, spoke of care and artistry. Iliana Moore’s design touches were everywhere—blending Adirondack and Arts and Crafts styles with a nod to the region’s 19th-century heritage. It’s no wonder she’s renowned for her ability to craft spaces that feel both romantic and moody, steeped in authenticity.

Our room was a haven of coziness, complete with a stone fireplace that we couldn’t resist lighting every evening. The furniture, rich in craftsmanship, seemed to carry the stories of countless travelers who had stayed before us. The attention to detail was impeccable, from the hand-stitched quilts to the locally sourced bath products. It was a space that encouraged you to linger, to sip your coffee just a little slower, to watch the fire crackle and let the world fade away.

If there’s one thing I’ll never forget about our stay, it’s the food. The restaurant at Deer Mountain Inn is a culinary revelation, where every dish is thoughtfully crafted to celebrate local ingredients and innovative flavors. Among the highlights is the house sourdough, a masterpiece of artisanal baking, served with an array of exquisite accompaniments. Each pairing transforms the bread into an elevated experience, from the smoky richness of tallow infused with garlic and urfa, to the velvety goat’s milk ricotta brightened by cured chiles. The house-cultured butter, accented with yuzu, lime, and charcoal, offers a playful blend of creamy and citrusy notes, while the stracciatella, paired with pine syrup, pistachio, and grape, brings a balance of sweet and savory. Starters like the burnt carrot and tahini with Jimmy Nardello peppers, and the chanterelle duxelle with pine nut cream, showcase the kitchen’s knack for creative yet comforting fare. More decadent options include the foie gras torchon with persimmon and long pepper, or the spuma di mortadella, airy and fragrant with nutmeg and juniper. Every bite reflects a deep respect for ingredients and a passion for culinary artistry, making dining at Deer Mountain Inn an essential part of the experience.

And then there was the wine. The Inn’s award-winning wine list, featuring over 600 unique selections, was a revelation. We marveled at the thoughtful curation, which focused on family-owned estates practicing organic and biodynamic methods. One glass led to another, and by the end of the evening, we felt as though we had been on a journey through vineyards around the world.
During the day, we explored every corner of the Inn. The Attic on the third floor quickly became a family favorite. With its Swiss Alpine lodge aesthetic and cozy atmosphere, it felt like a secret hideaway. I loved the Persian rugs and autumnal tones.
