Inlove: Chloe, you’ve had an incredible journey from “Big Little Lies” to starring in blockbuster films. How do you reflect on your career growth so far?
Chloe: I can’t believe I’ve been acting for ten years. That’s most of my life! It’s so surreal to me to reflect on all the incredible adventures I’ve had and all the unbelievable locations I’ve filmed in around the world. “Big Little Lies” was the best first project I could ever have worked on. I think that’s why I love grounded acting because that’s what I started with in “Big Little Lies.” I’m so grateful for that series and the beautiful family it created. That’s one of the biggest things I look for when I work on something – who is the family? Fortunately, I’ve always been able to walk away from a project with a newfound family and more knowledge that I can apply as I continue to develop as a person and move forward with my career.
Inlove: “My Spy The Eternal City” reunites you with Dave Bautista. Can you share some memorable moments from working with him again?
Chloe: I think what’s so special about our friendship is that I’ve really gotten to grow up with Dave being in my life. I remember a moment when the cast was celebrating over dinner, and I was talking to Dave about how my life has changed now that I’m a teen, and he shared his own experiences as a teenager with me. I love that I can connect like that with him and that I can always go to him with anything because he’s such a great friend to me. I also really loved filming the scene at the end of the movie where JJ and Sophie are reconnecting in this really beautiful full circle moment. That scene is very special to me because the love Sophie shows for JJ in that scene is actually how I really feel about Dave.
Inlove: The sequel has dialed up the action and heart. What new challenges did you face in this film compared to the first one?
Chloe: One of the new challenges was definitely having to revamp my character. Even though ‘Sophie’ is now a teen, she had to have remnants of the original ‘Sophie’ from the first film and personality traits that stick like her sassy, spunky spirit, while also being allowed to have grown and evolved as a person too. Sophie’s world is very different now that she’s a teen and a trained badass. In preparing, research is my number one priority. I look at every aspect of the character as a person, so I made mood boards to visualize her current style and energy and created music playlists to further help me visualize and feel her vibe. It was actually really fun! Our director Peter Segal and I talked and talked about Sophie, and we were constantly adjusting little things about her.
Inlove: You’ve been praised for your natural and intuitive acting style. How do you prepare for your roles to bring such authenticity to your performances?
Chloe: I try never to push the emotion unless it’s genuinely warranted in the scene. I keep in mind what’s at stake and that what’s happening is what actually matters. My goal is always to feel deep inside what the character is feeling and let my performance come from that—not to rely on external cues or choices—but to be in the moment as the character would. I find that very freeing, and each take can be very different. You always know when someone isn’t feeling it because they will do the same movement over and over. If you are focused on the feeling deep inside, your movements have the freedom to completely change between takes, and your voice inflections are free to be different each time.
Inlove: You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Who has been the most influential on your career and why?
Chloe: Jean-Marc Vallée is the most influential person I’ve ever worked with. He lives on in my music and in my life. I always think of him when a scene calls for deep emotion. The first time I ever cried on screen was on “Big Little Lies,” and I remember how Jean-Marc handled that. He didn’t ask me to just cry; he asked me to feel. I think his directing speaks to how beautiful he is as a person. I’m so grateful that my first experience with a director and friend was as dedicated as he was. He always gave his passionate viewpoint to all of those around him, and he’s one of a kind.
Inlove: In “My Spy The Eternal City,” you step further into the action star role. How did you train for the physically demanding scenes?
Chloe: There was so much training for this film. I spent over 15 months ahead of production preparing with martial arts and wushu training so I could do as much fight work as possible. I also did iFly skydiving simulation, got PADI scuba certified in South Africa, and I learned to ride a moped before I could drive a car. It was a lot of work and it was all so much fun. I was so lucky that our stunt coordinator Jim Churchman and my stunt double Kristina Baskett were both so supportive of letting me do as much as I possibly could. They dedicated so much production time to getting me ready. It was the most supportive and awesome experience of my life. They helped me become far braver and more capable, which I couldn’t have done without their professional support. The producer and director were super supportive. They made me feel like an honorary member of the stunt crew, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful!
Inlove: What advice would you give to new actors who look up to you and aspire to have a career like yours?
Chloe: I would always remind yourself to believe. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, don’t do it. Always follow your heart and be confident because that confidence gets you there. Remember, it takes a lot of patience and practice, so commit, commit, commit, and stop at nothing. Know that a positive attitude, having fun, and being a nice person goes a long way. There are so many no’s that come in this business—lots of rejection—but if you patiently wait and give every effort, when the yes’s come, it’s that much more rewarding.
Inlove: 2023 was a busy year with roles in “65,” “Dungeons and Dragons,” and “Pain Hustlers.” How do you balance such a hectic schedule and maintain your performance quality?
Chloe: What helps me stay balanced is doing completely different projects. I try not to do too much of the same thing. I love going from one world to a polar opposite one. It also allows me to keep my characters authentically different. I want to do something in every genre just to experience and explore all aspects of acting. That’s what is so beautiful about storytelling.
Inlove: You’ve been recognized as one of Entertainment Weekly & The SCAD Savannah Film Festival’s Breaking Big honorees. What does this recognition mean to you and your career?
Chloe: I am so honored to be recognized for my work. It means the world to me. Every time I accomplish one of my dreams, I feel the little girl in me smiling. I’m really proud and grateful for all the people who have helped me along the way. I’ve missed a lot of celebratory moments due to COVID and the strikes, so when there’s an opportunity to celebrate, I really cherish it.
Inlove: Looking ahead, what are your dreams and aspirations for the next phase of your acting career?
Chloe: I would love to do more action in the future; I find that super exciting. I’d also be down to work on a limited series. I love them because you get so much time to tell a story and be in your character. I like to go deep and stay immersed in a character so that it really becomes a part of me. An actual series would be very interesting. I’m also interested in writing and development. I feel like I have a lot of stories I want to tell. We spend a fair amount of time in development, and it’s only a matter of time before that takes off, so I’m excited about that.
Inlove: And our signature Inlove question, what does being in love mean to you?
Chloe: I love this question because I feel so much love within me as a person. A lot of people don’t have access to this vulnerable feeling, and I’m so happy that I feel pretty in tune with it. It’s not easy for a teen. I think many teens want love but are unsure how to get it or have a hard time finding someone on the same wavelength. There’s a lot of BS to cut through, and some teens are just more comfortable being closed off. I also think there’s a big difference between loving someone and being in love. You can love something, but the power of being in love is so much stronger when both people are on the same page. It goes above everything else. I think being in love is such a special thing, something that should be protected and cared for. There’s nothing more fulfilling than finding your person. You just might witness a bit of that in “My Spy and The Eternal City” wink, wink.
