David Bedella Joins Broadway’s “& Juliet” as ‘Lance’
The vibrant and revolutionary Broadway musical & Juliet welcomes the esteemed Olivier-winning actor David Bedella to its cast. Bedella, celebrated for his dynamic performances on the West End, will join the Broadway production as ‘Lance’ on March 5, 2024. This announcement comes as Tony Award-winner Paulo Szot takes a temporary leave from the production, with plans to return on July 16.
A Celebrated Return
David Bedella’s journey with & Juliet began in Manchester in 2019, where he first brought ‘Lance’ to life. His portrayal earned him a Laurence Olivier Award, solidifying his reputation as a powerhouse performer. Bedella’s return to this iconic role is highly anticipated, promising to bring his unique blend of charisma and talent to the Broadway stage.
Paulo Szot, who originated the role of ‘Lance’ on Broadway, will take a hiatus starting in March and return mid-July. Szot’s presence has been integral to the show’s success, and his return is eagerly awaited by fans and critics alike.
Reimagining a Classic & Juliet offers a fresh take on the timeless tale of Shakespeare’s Juliet, imagining a world where she chooses to live and explore life and love on her terms. This innovative narrative is set against a backdrop of pop anthems that resonate with contemporary audiences. The musical has been nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and features a script by Emmy-winning writer David West Read from “Schitt’s Creek.”

David Bedella’s Stellar Career
David Bedella’s career spans numerous critically acclaimed performances. His previous Olivier Award-winning roles include Jerry Springer in Jerry Springer The Opera and Usnavi in In The Heights. His diverse theater credits showcase his versatility and range, including roles such as Roger Debris in The Producers (UK National Tour), Sweeney in Sweeney Todd (Twickenham Theatre), and Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show (West End and UK National tour).
On television, Bedella has appeared in Big Mood (Channel 4), Sexy Beast (Paramount+), and Jack Ryan (Amazon), among others. His film credits include roles in Argylle (Apple), All The Old Knives (Amazon), Alexander (Warner Bros), Batman Begins (Warner Bros), and Jerry Springer The Opera (BBC Film).
A Global Phenomenon
Since its world premiere in September 2019 at the Manchester Opera House, & Juliet has captivated audiences across four continents. The production moved to London’s West End, where it won three Olivier Awards and six WhatsOnStage Awards before its final performance at the Shaftesbury Theatre in March 2023.
